Balmoral Block

Montreal, 2002

The transformation of Balmoral Block into a cultural and administrative complex was the source of intense questioning and discussions – and a multitude of contradictory projects – that enriched the reflection on Montreal’s built environment. CGA’s first observation showed that the introverted typology of the superblock, often used for multifunctional complexes, has had rather negative effects on the vitality of urban activity, particularly at street level. This project submitted for the competition is therefore based on the notion of transversal parcels: a construction in four parallel volumes, oriented from east to west, separated by circulation and service fractures and linked by a spine welding the amalgam together.
